Things to Know About Owning a Postage Meter

Postage meters are a big savor of time and money for businesses that send out high volumes of mail. As convenient as they may be however, postage meters do come with specific responsibilities you must adhere to if you are to stay within the law regarding your bulk mail.

The first and foremost thing to understand is that your postage meter is on lease to you, and you alone; you cannot sell or rent it out to anyone else. Additionally you are not allowed to rent or purchase a postage meter from anyone other than an approved postage meter manufacturer.

Your postage meter will be subject to periodic inspections by a meter manufacturer as required by the U.S. Postal Service. It is mandatory that you allow these inspections to take place.

This one should really go without saying, but you MUST print the exact amount of postage on your postage label. This amount can vary depending on the size, weight and class ranking of the mail piece.

Included on the mailing label is a date; this date is the timeframe your mail piece must be sent out by. If your bulk mail has not been mailed by this date you will need to print out a new label with a new mailing date. The postage amount on the new label must be zero. Please note: you can only correct the date ONE time per each piece of mail. The new label can go in one of two places for a letter-sized piece: either on the upper right-hand corner of the non-addressed side of the envelope, or the lower left corner of the addressed side. For parcel or larger pieces, place the new label next to the original postage imprint.

For mail pieces without enough postage you may print out a second label for the additional amount of postage owed.
